Booking on the official website vs an OTA: how points, cancellation, and member rates differ

How booking through an OTA changes points, cancellation, and member rates under Marriott, Accor, Lotte, Shilla, and Josun terms, compared from official texts.

Even for the same date and the same room, three things change depending on where the booking is made: whether membership points are earned, to whom and on what terms a cancellation is made, and whether rates and perks offered only through official channels apply. This guide sets out the differences based on hotel chains' membership terms and official information and on the original text of OTA help pages. Prices themselves vary by date, so they are not covered.

Membership earning: how chain terms treat OTA bookings

Both international and Korean chains have clauses that exclude bookings made through OTAs from earning.

Program Earning on OTA and travel agency bookings Summary of the terms or official text
Marriott Bonvoy Not eligible Bookings through third-party channels such as tour operators and online travel channels are "Ineligible Rates" (2.1.f.i) and do not qualify for points, miles, or elite benefits
ALL (Accor) Not eligible Bookings made through online travel agency websites do not earn. Corporate negotiated rates earn through all channels
Lotte Hotel Rewards Not eligible Bookings through OTAs, other travel agencies, and booking agents are excluded from qualifying stays and earning (Article 31, Paragraph 4)
Shilla Rewards Not eligible "Room charges paid through travel agencies" is explicitly listed among earning exclusions
Club Josun Reward Not eligible Excludes "amounts booked and paid through other online sites excluding the website, travel agencies, outside vendors, and groups" (Article 9, Paragraph 6)

Marriott's terms give rates found on Marriott.com without a discount code as an example of a qualifying rate, and state that stays at ineligible rates do not earn elite night credits either (2.1.d.ii). There is also a clause stating that benefits may vary by booking channel, rate, and region (4.1.a), so it is safe for higher-tier members to assume that tier benefits such as room upgrades are unlikely on OTA bookings.

Under terms effective from September 7, 2026, Lotte Hotel Rewards defines a "qualifying stay" as a stay booked through an official booking channel (the website, mobile app, each chain's reservations department, and so on) and completed (Article 27, Paragraph 6). Taxes and service charges are also excluded from the earning amount. Shilla Rewards lists base earning rates of 3% on rooms and 1% on dining, based on the final payment amount, while excluding taxes and room charges booked via travel agencies.

Club Josun Reward works a little differently. The first item on the exclusion list in Article 9, Paragraph 6 of its terms is "room stay amounts," and the earning rate is 1% of the actual payment excluding taxes and service charges. Since its earning structure centers on the hotels' restaurants rather than rooms, there is less reason than with Lotte or Shilla to choose the official channel in hopes of room points. The terms page shows several revised versions together, so before joining, open and read the latest revision at the top of the page.

Cancellation policies: to whom, and on what terms

Bookings on the official website follow the cancellation terms the hotel sets for each rate. Lotte Hotel Seoul's 2026 package information states that cancellations and changes are possible until 18:00 three days before check-in, after which one night's rate is charged as a penalty.

For OTA bookings, the rate terms displayed by the OTA apply. Booking.com's help pages explain that cancellation fees are set by the property and that the policy can be checked in the booking confirmation. They state that "non-refundable" rates incur a fee for changes or cancellation, and that date changes themselves are not possible. Even at the same hotel, each OTA mixes refundable and non-refundable rates, so read the cancellation terms under the rate name separately before pressing the booking button.

For stays in Korea, there is also the Consumer Dispute Settlement Standard, a notice issued by the Fair Trade Commission. A revision on December 19, 2024, changed "no penalty for cancellation on the day of the contract" to "cancellation possible within 24 hours after the contract," limited to before midnight at the start of the scheduled date of use. However, according to the Practical Laws guidance, a lodging business's own terms apply first, and this standard is a basis for settlement and recommendations in disputes, with no binding force.

Official-channel-only rates and perks

Beyond points, official channels also offer exclusive products. Lotte Hotel Seoul's promotion list separately posts a "website special rate," an "app special rate," and products exclusive to Rewards members, and Lotte Hotel Rewards information states that member-only rates are offered only on the official website. The "Early Bird 30 days" product offers a discount when booked at least 30 days ahead, with a booking period of January 1 to December 31, 2026, and a stay period through March 31, 2027. This product cannot be combined with other discounts and coupons, such as the 10% discount for Trevi Club members.

There are also cases where facility perks are tied to the booking route. Jungdongjin Sun Cruise Resort describes its infinity pool (open July 10 to August 31, 2026) as "free admission only for guests who booked rooms through the website or by phone." This property's winter terms are covered in Jungdongjin Sun Cruise Resort vs Lakai Sandpine.

What to check before booking, in order

  1. First decide whether membership tier benefits or points matter. If they do, use the official website or app rate as the baseline.
  2. When looking at OTA rates for the same date, note the total including taxes and service charges together with the cancellation terms.
  3. Check the property's information to see whether facility perks (pool, sauna, shuttle) are "limited to official bookings."
  4. For a property in Korea, review the cancellation terms again with the possibility that plans change within 24 hours of payment in mind.
