Winter hotel pool checklist before booking: season, water temperature, age limits, sessions, and saunas
Before booking a winter hotel pool, check its season, water temperature, pool and sauna age rules, session times, and guest fees, using official examples.
On a winter staycation, the pool can easily become the reason to choose a hotel, but there is no guarantee that the outdoor pool in the photos will be open on the stay date. Even within the same hotel, the pool and sauna can have different age rules, and sessions or guest fees may apply separately. This guide groups the official information from Korean hotels covered in staydiary's hotel comparisons into five items to check.
Operating season: "it opens that day" matters more than "it exists"
Outdoor pools often operate seasonally. Jungdongjin Sun Cruise Resort lists its infinity pool's operating period as July 10 to August 31, 2026, so it does not apply to a winter trip (Jungdongjin Sun Cruise Resort vs Lakai Sandpine).
By contrast, Grand Josun Busan describes its 6th-floor outdoor pool as "kept at a suitable temperature year-round" and operates it from 09:00 to 21:00. However, it closes on the third Tuesday of each month, so for a Tuesday stay in December or January, check the date (Grand Josun Busan vs The Westin Josun Busan). The Shilla Seoul's indoor pool has a regular closure on the third Wednesday of each month, and Josun Palace's pool on the first Monday of each month. If a winter pool is the goal, it is safer to mark the regular closing days on the calendar before choosing a room.
Water temperature: some give a number, others only say "suitable temperature"
Few hotels state water temperatures as numbers. Ananti at Busan Cove says it keeps the Water House outdoor mini infinity pool at about 27°C in summer and about 35°C in winter, adding that this may vary with weather conditions (Ananti at Busan Cove vs Paradise Hotel Busan). Lahan Select Gyeongju lists its indoor adult lap pool at 30–31°C in winter (Sono Calm Gyeongju vs Lahan Select Gyeongju).
Grand Josun Busan and Josun Palace only use the phrase "kept at a suitable temperature." How an outdoor pool feels changes greatly with air temperature and wind, so for hotels that give no number, ask about the water temperature for the stay date before booking.
Age limits: pool and sauna rules differ
With children, this is the item that most often goes wrong. Even at the same hotel, children may be allowed into the pool with a guardian but not into the sauna at all.
| Property | Pool rules | Sauna and other rules |
|---|---|---|
| The Shilla Seoul | Ages 13 and older on weekdays; on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, under-13s may use it with an adult guardian | Indoor sauna from age 13 |
| Josun Palace | Under 7 with an adult; under 36 months in swim diapers; 140 cm or shorter must wear safety gear in the main pool | Separate fee for rooms without sauna access |
| Grand Josun Busan | Ages 12 and under with a guardian; 35 months and under limited to the kids pool and whirlpool | No sauna entry for ages 12 and under |
| Ananti at Busan Cove | Ages 13 and under with a guardian (guardians also buy admission); under 36 months in swim diapers | Children aged 4 and older may not enter the opposite-sex changing room |
| Shilla Stay Plus Ihotewoo | Under 130 cm tall must wear a life jacket and be accompanied by an adult guardian; under 48 months in swim diapers | No mixed-sex entry to showers and changing rooms from age 4 |
| Lahan Select Gyeongju | Free for 24 months and under; over 24 months to 13 years with a guardian | 50% off for guests |
The differences between The Shilla Seoul and Josun Palace are covered in more detail in The Shilla Seoul vs Josun Palace. For plans to swim with elementary-age children on a weekday, The Shilla Seoul's weekday rule of ages 13 and older is the biggest variable.
Sessions, entry methods, and guest fees
Some pools operate in time slots. The outdoor pool at Shilla Stay Plus Ihotewoo divides 09:00–22:00 into six sessions: 09:00–10:50, 11:00–12:50, 13:20–15:20, 15:30–17:30, 18:00–19:50, and 20:00–22:00. Daybeds and cabanas are paid and reserved at the front desk on the 1st floor, and sun loungers are first come, first served (Parnas Hotel Jeju vs Shilla Stay Plus Ihotewoo). Ananti Cove states that pool entry is possible from 13:00 on the day of check-in.
Fee structures also differ by property. The Shilla Jeju's family pool is a guests-only facility open daily from 09:00 to 23:00 (The Shilla Jeju vs Lotte Hotel Jeju). Grand Josun Busan's sauna has a regular price of KRW 55,000 per person (tax included); guests in Superior and Deluxe rooms get 50% off for up to 2 adults, and guests from Premier up to Suites get free access for up to 2 adults. Lahan Select Gyeongju's indoor pool is 50% off for guests. Since facility costs vary by room category, the real difference shows only when the room price difference and pool and sauna costs are compared together.
Five questions to ask the hotel before booking
- Whether both the outdoor and indoor pools operate on the stay date, and whether it overlaps with a regular closing day
- The water temperature for the stay date (especially for outdoor pools) and whether it operates in bad weather
- Whether children of the ages traveling can enter the pool and the sauna, respectively
- Whether session reservations are needed, and whether facilities can be used before check-in or after check-out
- Whether access is free for guests, discounted, or different by room category
Checking these five things before booking the room reduces the chance of hearing "the pool is closed today" or "children cannot enter" on arrival.
